What a removal cost calculator can tell you
A removal cost calculator answers one question: roughly what should I budget? It is a starting number, not a quote.
For a sense of scale, MoneyHelper, the government-backed money guidance service, says average removal costs “can start from £400 to over £1,000”, with renting a van and moving yourself offered as the alternative. Those figures are for home moves, and they were current when this guide was written.
That is a wide spread, and the width is the point. Two three-bedroom properties on the same street can price differently because one has a lift and a loading bay and the other has forty stairs and no parking.
What the calculator is actually measuring
Almost every removals price comes down to how long the job takes and how much van it fills. Volume is the big one, and bedrooms are shorthand for cubic feet: a sparsely furnished three-bed can be a smaller job than a crammed two-bed. After that it is access at both ends, the distance between them, and whatever extras you add.
Access is the factor people forget. Floor level, whether there is a lift, and how far the van can park from the door all decide how much of the day is spent carrying rather than driving. Carrying distance is time, and time is the bill. Our guide to how much removals cost takes each of those factors through to the bill itself - what the crew time, the van, the packing and the insurance are each costing you.
None of that is guesswork on the remover’s side. It is arithmetic, once they know the facts.
Where estimates drift
An online estimate is only as good as what you feed it, and the things people underestimate are consistent. Lofts and garages. The shed. Books, which are heavy and take longer to pack than anyone expects. A piano, a large aquarium or a gun cabinet, each of which may need specialist handling.
The fix is dull but it works. Before you fill anything in, walk through every room, including the ones you do not think of as rooms, and write down what is in them. If you are moving a business rather than a home, the equivalent is a walk-round with whoever knows where the archive boxes live, and the figures above will not apply: commercial relocations are quoted on different information, as are moves overseas. Our guide to domestic, international and commercial removals sets out what each type needs from you.
Dates move the number too. Removers generally report Fridays and month-ends as their busiest slots, so if your date is flexible, ask what a midweek move would save.
Turning an estimate into a price
A quote becomes firm when a remover has seen what they are moving. The British Association of Removers’ Code of Practice requires its members to carry out an accurate assessment of the work before quoting, and many firms now do that over video rather than in person, which is worth asking about if a visit is hard to arrange.
Getting the exclusions in writing is the part to read closely, because most unpleasant surprises on moving day are not overcharging, they are a service someone assumed was included. Our guide to how to compare removal quotes goes through what a quotation should spell out, and who owes you that in writing even when they are not a member of anything.
What the number does not include
Three quotes that all say £950 can describe three different jobs. Before you compare the numbers, check each one covers the same things:
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Packing | Full packing, fragile-only, or none at all changes the price substantially |
| Dismantling | Beds, wardrobes and garden furniture take time to take apart and rebuild |
| Insurance | What cover is included, the limit per item, and what is excluded |
| Waiting time | What happens, and what it costs, if completion runs late |
| Storage | Whether a delay between dates is covered, and the redelivery charge |
Working out which of them is actually the cheapest is a job of its own, and how to compare removal quotes goes through it.
Frequently asked questions
How far ahead should I book?
Four to six weeks is comfortable for a typical move, and longer if you are set on a Friday or the end of the month. If your dates are not fixed yet, ask a remover whether they will hold a provisional slot.
Is a video survey as good as someone visiting?
For most home moves, yes, provided you show everything, including the loft and any outbuildings. Where a property is unusually large, or access is awkward enough that it needs judging in person, a physical survey is still the better option.
Does the estimate change if my completion date slips?
It can. A firm quote is usually tied to a date, and a move that slips into a busier slot may be repriced. Ask upfront what happens if completion moves, and get the answer in writing.
What should I have ready before I start?
Your two addresses, a rough room-by-room inventory, and your likely date. With those three things to hand you can compare quotes from removal companies near you and put the estimate to the test.
